Trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality amongst the economically active and young population. Disability following trauma further adds to the socioeconomic burden of the society.
In 2011, the National Trauma Registry was started where data from all the restructured hospitals in Singapore will be captured and tiered according to severity. Tier 1 being the severe trauma with Injury Severity Score (ISS) ≥ 16, Tier 2 consists of patients with ISS between 9-15 and Tier 3 consists of patients whose ISS is < 9 including those seen and discharge at the Emergency Department and the elderly patients ≥ 65years old suffering from isolated hip fractures resulting from same level falls.
In Singapore, we see an increasing number of trauma in the elderly and our leading mechanism of injury is fall followed by motor vehicle accident. Trauma is the leading admission diagnosis since 2009 as well as the 5th leading cause of death. This has added significance to Singapore as a nation since our workforce is the only resource we have to support our economy.
With the setting up of this Singapore Trauma Website, we hope to create a platform to connect people with the aim to provide the best care possible for the injured.
